Mary E. Best

As a nature photographer, I enjoy most being in the field—standing very still waiting for a humming bird to light on its perch in a Mexican desert; watching a light show of color transform the sky on a sunset beach; hiking the mountain trails of the Santa Monicas, breathing deep and finding sage in the air; listening to the silence of the desert, or watching snow birds lift off a winter marsh—nature's gift and reminder that we are one with the phoebe, cactus, and sycamore. I began with an ancient all-manual Pentax K1000 which continues to be my friendly lens onto the world. Environments range from Marshlands and beaches of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands on the East Coast; desert flora and fauna of Southern California and Mexico; daily life scenes in Northern Italy and the lovely neighborhood gardens, fountains and monuments in and around our Nation’s Capital and around the country. I have been documenting the Peace & Social Justice movement, as a way of capturing those diverse and creative expressions of dissent, hope and peace, through images and handmade banners photographed at marches and demonstrations throughout the United States.

Work has been exhibited at the Audubon Society Festival; Artspace Exhibit, Silver Spring, MD; Takoma Park Folk, Jazz & Street Festivals; Mt. Rainier Holiday Crafts Sale, and Joe's Movement Emporium.
